Kathmandu : The Communist Party Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) Saturday challenged the Nepali Congress(NC) to claim for the presidential post by showing a majority in the Constituent Assembly.
General Secretary Jhalanath Khanal suggested the political parties, who are claiming for the post of first President of Nepal, not to indulge themselves for the post.
Khanal said that the NC started to claim for the post of the president after the largest party the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) gave up its claim over presidency.
On Friday, NC General Secretary Ram Baran Yadav said his party will propose Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala as the first president of the country.
The CPN-Maoists on Thursday had dropped their claim on the presidential post and decided to propose a non-political or civil society candidate for the post.
Speaking at a press conference here, the CPN-UML General Secretary claimed that amendment to the interim constitution is the most important issue for now.
Answering a query if the CPN-UML would support Koirala as the president, Khanal said that his party will not favor an individuals the ceremonial head of state.
Khanal confirmed that all the problems will be resolved within a week as consultations among the political parties are moving close to a consensus.
