UN gets Pakistan letter requesting probe into Benazir’s murder: Spokesperson

By APP,

United Nations : The United Nations said Friday it had received a formal letter from Pakistan requesting a U.N. probe into the assassination of PPP leader Benazir Bhutto.

Pakistan’s U.N. Ambassador Munir Akram delivered the letter from Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi when he called on Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday. The U.N. chief returned to New York on Thursday from Rome where he attended the food summit.

“Yes, the secretary-general has received that letter … and he is studying it,” Ban’s spokesperson Michele Montas told the regular noon briefing.

Details of the letter which Ambassador Akram brought with him from Islamabad were not disclosed. Last week, he was in Pakistan where he had consultations with the country’s top leadership.

According to well-informed sources, Qureshi, in his letter, recalled the events in Pakistan which led to Ms. Bhutto’s assassination and subsequent resolutions adopted by the country’s national and provincial assemblies demanding a U.N. investigation.

After the meeting with the secretary-general, Ambassador Akram said that the UN chief has promised to respond to the request as soon as possible but gave no time-frame.
