First ever visit to Pakistani jails by Indian chapter of Pak-India judicial committee on June 9

New Delhi : First ever visit of Indian chapter of Pak- India judicial Committee on prisoners will take place next week to see Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails.

Afrasiab, Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner to India told newsmen here on Friday that the members of the committee would visit Pakistan from June 9 to 14 and undertake visit to jails in Karachi , Lahore and Rawalpindi .

The committee comprising Justice (Retd) Mr. Nagendra Rai, Justice (Retd) Mr. Amarjeet Choudhary, Justice (Retd) Mr. A.S. Gill and Justice (Retd) and Mr. M.A. Khan is also expected to meet the members of Pakistan chapter of the judicial Committee and discuss the issues relating to prisoners in both countries.

During their visit, the retired judges will also interact with other stakeholders and leaders in Pakistan .

In return, Pakistan chapter of the committee comprising Justice (Retd) Mr. Abdul Qadeer Chaudhary, Justice (Retd) Mr. Fazal Karim, Justice (Retd) Mr. Nasir Aslam Zahid and Justice (Retd) Mr. Mian Muhammad Ajmal will visit Indian jails.

The decision to visit jails in both the countries by the committee members was taken during the first joint meeting of the judicial committee held in Delhi on Feb, 26, 2008.

The Committee was formed in January 2007 by the External Affairs Minister of India and the Foreign Minister of Pakistan to recommend steps for humane treatment and expeditious release of prisoners in the two countries’ jails.

As recommended by the committee, both the countries had already exchanged consolidated list with full particulars and their present status of nationals in each others jails on March 31, 2008.
