Jammu : Normal life in Jammu city and its peripheries was thrown out of gear on Tuesday as all business establishments remained closed with no public traffic plying on the city and adjoining roads through out the day following a shut down call by unemployed
engineering graduate and diploma holders.
The striking professionals who gave the call for bandh in support of their demand of early engagement in government departments, set ablaze tiers at main crossings to disrupt the even scanty traffic on the roads. Number of political parties had supported the strike call given by the association.
Protesting engineers also indulged in a ding dong battle with police in which five of them were injured after police resort to cane charge to disperse them.
The shut down also affected the attendance in government offices while most of the educational institutions observed an unofficial holiday on account of poor attendance of students in the class rooms.
Since early morning police had made elaborate arrangements by deploying Central Reserve Police contingents in sensitive areas of Ragunath Bazar, Rajinder Bazar, Kacchi Chawani and other interior areas of the city in order to deal with any law and order situation.
A large number of unemployed engineers gathered near Vikram Chowk area and staged a protest demonstration. The protestors blocked the busy Tawi Bridge and disrupted the traffic movement.
Eyewitnesses told News Agency of Kashmir raising anti government slogans, the protestors resort to stone pelting on police personnel which had to resort to chan-charge to disperse the mob. At least five persons received injuries in the ding dong battle between the two
sides, which continued for more than an hour.
