Ramallah : Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat considered the Israeli attack on Gaza on Monday, the killing of an Al-Aqsa Martyrs activist and military operations in the West Bank a slam to the Palestinian presidential decree on dissolving armed militias.
In a press conference held in Ramallah, Erekat said Israel is undermining the emergency government headed by Salam Fayadh.
He said "the revolt," recently staged by the Islamic group Hamas in Gaza enabled Israel to achieve its scheme of separating the strip from the West Bank.
Erekat stressed that the government is doing its best to facilitate dispatch of basic supplies to Gaza, pointing out that the humanitarian condition in the Strip is worsening rapidly.
Some families, including one of seven members, are living with an income of USD 2 and 87 per cent of Gaza's inhabitants are below poverty rate, he said, adding that the Dutch government provided financial aid to help in supplying seeds for agriculture in Gaza.
Erekat described the situation in the Rafah crossing as a humanitarian catastrophe, saying there are tens of sick people stranded there. A woman died at the crossing on Sunday, he added.
