Tehran : Iran’s parliament will “carefully” study the package of concessions presented by European Union foreign relations chief Javier Solana seeking to resolve the nuclear issue, speaker Ali Larijani Sunday said but insisted the nation’s enrichment right would not be compromised.
Larijani said Tehran’s stand that nuclear activities are its “sovereign right” remains unchanged in any negotiations with the West, IRNA reported.
Meanwhile, an influential member of parliament told reporters on the sideline of Sunday’s session that the country was in no hurry to comment on the package, or reject it, and the two sides could reach agreement on their common aspects without compromising Tehran’s “nuclear rights”.
Solana Saturday handed over an updated package of concessions from the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany (P5+1) to Foreign Minister Manoucher Mottaki to dissuade Tehran from its uranium enrichment activities but apparently failed to achieve a breakthrough.
The package, included civilian nuclear cooperation as well as wider trade in aircraft, energy, high technology and agriculture.
Mottaki told Solana Tehran’s response to the concessions would depend upon how the West reacts to a package of proposals it had offered.
Iran last month offered a package of proposals, which called for an improved inspection system by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), while reaffirming its “non-negotiable” right to uranium enrichment.
Referring to Iran’s package of proposals to deal with international developments, Boroujerdi said exchange of packages between Iran and the EU has brought a balance in the process of talks between the two sides.
“We can reach agreements with the other side about common aspects of the two packages,” Boroujerdi said.
