Backgrounder: Previous Israel-Hezbollah prisoner exchanges

Rosh Hanikra, Israel : Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah group began swapping prisoners on Wednesday, which would see the return of remains of two abducted Israeli soldiers and the release of five Lebanese prisoners.

The following are four previous prisoner swap deals between Israel and Hezbollah.

June 2008: Convicted Hezbollah spy Nassim Nasser was released by Israel. Hezbollah then returned the remains of five Israeli soldiers killed during Hezbollah’s 2006 war against Israel.

January 2004: Israel released 435 terrorists in exchange for Israeli businessman Elhanan Tanenbaum and the corpses of three Israeli soldiers.

June 1998: Israel released the remains of 40 Hezbollah terrorists in return for the remains of one Israeli soldier.

July 1996: Hezbollah released the remains of two Israeli soldiers for 123 Lebanese prisoners.
