Last June the court overturned, with five votes against four, a 32 year old law that prohibited citizens of the District of Colombia to possess weapons.

The high court considered that this prohibition went against the rights of the Second Amendment of the Constitution.

Consequently persons of the region will be able to possess weapons but use them only in cases of self-defense inside the home and with less than 12 bullets.

Arms defenders criticize the initiative considering it too strict and threaten to take legal action.

The controversy over this issue could lead to a greater impact in urban regions where regulations of ownership of pistols as a means to reduce murders.

According to official estimates more than 270 million civilians own weapons in the United States, sometimes without the required documents.
