Taliban, members of Islamic party discuss Iraqi governorates election law

Baghdad : President Jalal Talabani met Friday with several members of the Islamic party of Iraq, discussing with them the recent parliamentary deliberations on the governorates election’ law.

A statement by the Presidency said that Talabani, who referred the law back to parliament, stressed that national accord was an important part of the new Iraq.

He said that the prevention of corruption was a paramount national duty, indicating the law’s current from was against constitution. Iyad Al-Samarrai and Osama Al-Takriti, both of the Islamic party, affirmed that the party was for national accord, said the Presidency.

The Iraqi parliament ratified last Tuesday the law on the governorates election. The parliament decided then to postpone elections in the city of Kirkuk, resulting in the withdraw of MPs from Kurdistan coalition bloc, the supreme Islamic council, and others in objection to the step.
