“Firing is continuing today along the LoC. This is the sixth ceasefire violation along the LoC in the past three weeks by Pakistan troopers,” Defence Ministry spokesperson Lt. Col. Goswami told reporters today.

On Monday afternoon, a group of 15 Pakistani soldiers crossed the LoC at Nowgam sector in Baramulla district in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. An Indian Army trooper was killed in the exchnage of fire, Lt. Col. Goswami said.

“Indian troops also came under heavy fire from across the LoC, when a patrol was moving from one observation post to another,” Lt. Col Goswami added.

The LoC divides Indian-administered and Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

Following the incident, both India and Pakistan have convened a flag meeting of security personnel to address the ceasefire violation, the spokesperson said.

“Similar incidents of LoC violaton have been reported from Bimbergalli, Gurez, Mendhar, Tangdhar, and other sectors in Jammu and Kashmir along the LoC in the last two-three months.” The spokesperson argued this indicates Pakistan military is providing cover for insurgents who are trying to enter Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir from the Pakistan side.

On July 26, there was a ceasefire violation in Krishna Ghati sector along the LoC and there were three violations on July 17, and Indian troops did not retaliate when Pakistani troopers fired at them on July 11.

India raised the issue with Pakistan at a Foreign Secretary-level meeting in Delhi July 21.
