Spain-Uruguay Discuss EU Directive

By Prensa Latina,

Madrid : Uruguay Foreign Minister Gonzalo Fernandez expressed his government’s concern to Spanish peer Miguel Angel Moratinos about the consequences of the so-called Return Directive approved by the European Union (EU).

The official note of the Spanish Foreign Office states Moratinos gave his Uruguayan counterpart details of the EU regulation against non-European immigrants coming to the Union and conveyed a reassuring message.

According to diplomatic circles, Fernandez recalled the existence of a Friendship Treaty inked by Spain and Uruguay in 1870, which establishes a differential treatment to Uruguayan residents in Spain.

During the talks there was some reference to the bicentenary of the independence of Latin American countries and to the situation and prospects of Spanish investments in Uruguay.
