CPI-M’s Tripura unit gets new secretary

Agartala : Tripura’s ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) central committee member Bijon Dhar has been elected secretary of the party’s state unit.

The 58-year-old CPI-M leader replaced 85-year-old veteran Marxist leader Baidyanath Majumder, also a CPI-M central committee member.

“An 84-member new Tripura CPI-M state committee headed by Dhar was constituted after a hectic three day long state conference late Wednesday night,” said Gautam Das, party spokesman, here Thursday.

Political analysts felt that with the election of Dhar, the second generation leadership has emerged in the ruling CPI-M, thus marking the end of the era of Nripen Chakraborty, Dasaratha Deb and Baidyanath Majumder who were founders of the communist movement in the northeastern state.

Chakraborty and Deb, both of whom have passed away, were chief ministers, while Majumder was the deputy chief minister of Tripura.

CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat, party’s politburo member Sitaram Yechuri and Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, CPI-M Assam unit secretary Udhab Barman were among those who addressed the conference, where 511 party delegates including 65 women participated.
