Palestinian Leftist factions and Hamas agree to end crackdown

By Xinhua,

Gaza : Palestinian leftist factions agreed with Islamic Hamas movement to end the politically-motivated arrests that Hamas exchanges with rival Fatah faction, an official said on Thursday.

A committee comprising representatives from all factions would be formed “to receive the names of the political prisoners and setup a mechanism for immediate release of the prisoners,” said Saleh Nasser, an official representing the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP).

On Wednesday night, Hamas leadership and the leftist factions held a meeting. An understanding was reached during the meeting to end the media campaign and incitement that Hamas and Fatah launched against each other, said Nasser.

The meeting, which mostly focused on Fatah-Hamas tension, has also discussed the ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian factions in Gaza. The factions agreed to call on Egypt, which brokered the deal, to intensify pressure on Israel to comply the deal.

Hamas forces in Gaza, and Palestinian National Authority’s Fatah-dominated forces in the West Bank, recently staged crackdown on their dissidents in the two territories following a beachside blast which killed a girl and five Hamas members.

Hamas accuses Fatah of being involved in the explosion and launched the toughest crackdown on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ movement in Gaza. In response, Fatah conducted crackdown in the West Bank.

Hamas has been ruling Gaza since it drove out pro-Abbas forces and ousted his movement last summer after fierce battles.
