Karachi : Three Islamists and three sacked paramilitary personnel have been charged with attempting to assassinate President Pervez Musharraf in Karachi five years ago.

Judge Ghulam Ali A. Samtio Saturday read out the charges against the six, including three office bearers of the banned Harkat-ul-Mujahideen Al-Almi group and three others who were from the paramilitary Pakistan Rangers.

The six were accused of an attempt to blow up the president’s cavalcade on its way from the airport to army house in Karachi on April 26, 2002, the Daily Times reported Sunday.

According to the prosecution, the accused parked a Suzuki vehicle laden with explosives but the remote-controlled device didn’t detonate the explosives. The alleged conspiracy came to the fore after their arrests in another case. The accused have denied the charge.

There have been at least four known attempts on the life of Musharraf, the last one this month when anti-aircraft gun mounted on the terrace of a house in Islamabad were used to hit Musharraf’s helicopter as his government prepared for an assault on the Lal Masjid.
