Kishtwar : Hundreds of people staged a protest demonstration against the alleged atrocities of police outside the Kishtwar police station, late last evening. The protestors staged a sit in and demanded immediate shifting of SHO of the area.
The protests rock town following the arrest of a local residence Sat Paul, who people allege was kept in illegal custody by the police.
Sources told News Agency of Kashmir that a suspended inspector of police Bihari Lal, who is a resident of Poochal area, was pressurizing his neighbour Sat Paul to sell his land to him.
"When all the efforts of the inspector failed, he persuaded the local police to arrest Sat Paul on some false charge", a local resident told NAK. He added that the police picked up Sat Paul from his residence and lodged him in illegal custody.
"As police did not find any excuse to detain the villager, they tried to book him for taking liquor in public place", he said adding, "However, the police failed in its nefarious designs as doctors refused to give a false medical report".
In the meanwhile, when the news of detention of the villager spread in the area a large number of people gathered outside the police station and staged a protest demonstration. Shouting anti-police and anti-administration slogs the protestors were demanding release of Sat Paul and stern action against the SHO.
The protestors were pacified only when Superintendent of Police and SDPO concerned visited the spot and assured action against the guilty cops.
It is pertinent to mention here that the allegations of atrocities and illegal actions by the local police has seen a rising trend in Kishtwar but the authorities have failed to shift the SHO against whom several complaints were pending.
