Dhaka : Young batsman Manoj Tiwari, who had a dislocation in his right shoulder during practice here and had to return home, will undergo surgery in Mumbai on Monday, a cricket official said here Saturday.
Tiwari, 21, would be out of action for at least four weeks after an arthroscopy and some more days for rehabilitation, said Niranjan Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Bengal's Tiwari, one of the two new faces in the 15-member One-day International squad that is playing a three-match series against Bangladesh, was injured two days before the first match and returned home immediately.
"Tiwari sustained an injury to the right shoulder while fielding at Dhaka. His shoulder came out and this was then relocated by Indian team physiotherapist John Gloster," Shah said in a statement.
Doctor Anant Joshi, after examining Tiwari in Mumbai, said his MRI had revealed an injury to the shoulder.
"Considering Tiwari's age and demands of his dominant arm, arthroscopic shoulder surgery will be done by Joshi on Monday. Post surgery, his arm is likely to be on a sling for three to four weeks. He will then require rehab before full function can be achieved."
Although chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar and another selector, Bhupinder Singh (senior), are here, no decision on Tiwari's replacement has so far been taken, perhaps because of the short series.
India are playing a three-match ODI series, with the last match slated in Chittagong Tuesday.
Two Test matches will follow the one-day series.
