Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Ariel Caulitan said the identities of the “lawless elements” were to be verified and that they could be members of the Abu Sayyaf rebel group.

Caulitan said the fighting occurred on the southern island of Lanhil, northeast of Abu Sayyaf’s stronghold Basilan island. The operation was going on at mid-day Tuesday.

All the four dead navy personnel have already been brought to camp general Navarro in Zamboanga city and the two wounded are in stable condition at the camp general Navarro hospital, Caulitan said.
