The official said on condition of anonymity that in view of the account by eyewitnesses who put the toll at 15, casualties could be even higher.

A Xinhua reporter at the scene said the bus was destroyed by the powerful explosion and a sizeable police force and a good number of fire-fighting vehicles had been deployed there.

So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Another suicide bombing on Sep 29 killed at least 27 security personnel and injured 21 in Kabul.

Over 5,000 people have been killed so far this year in increasing insurgency-related violence.
