Yangzhou (China) : New Delhi, which hasn’t held a major international table tennis event for 15 years, won the right to host the 2009 Asian championships here Wednesday.
The Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) denied the only other bidder Doha, Qatar, and gave the championships to New Delhi instead, enraging the Qatari representatives, who stormed out of the meeting.
ATTU president Li Fu Rong admitted most members anyway favoured New Delhi, who last hosted the Asian championships in 1992.
“Qatar has held a lot of major sports events including the 2004 world table tennis championships and the 2006 Asian Games, while India has been away from major table tennis events for 15 years,” he said.
