Dhaka : About 1,200 Bangladeshi fishermen and over 100 trawlers are missing in the Bay of Bengal since Thursday evening following sudden storm that triggered 12-15 feet high waves, local officials have said.
Bangladeshi southern Barguna District Trawler Owners Association Advisor Golam Mustafa Chowdhury told Xinhua some 500 trawlers went to the sea for fishing Thursday, and 400 had returned to the shore till Friday evening.
He said the fate of 100 trawlers with about 1,200 fishermen was not known. Each trawler usually goes to the sea with 10-14 fishermen.
Mustafa quoted some fishermen who could return to the shore from the turbulent sea as saying they have seen three trawlers sinking in the rough sea.
Fishermen who returned from the rough Bay of Bengal Friday afternoon said 12 to 15 feet high sea waves prevented trawlers and fishermen from returning to the shore.
