We need a common vision, a global consensus, an alliance for action, said the diplomat, who stated that only then, “will we have the opportunity to face up to this huge challenge to our lives.”

The Conference at the Indonesian beach resort in December gained support of 187 countries to start a two-year negotiation process to reach an agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol.

That protocol, which expires in 2012, controls greenhouse-effect gas emissions, considered the main cause of global warming.

Our intention is to support this process, said the president, who reiterated that it is necessary “to maintain the moment created by Bali’s Route Map.”

Representatives of the member countries, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and the media will attend the debate Monday and Tuesday, and 20 ministers are expected to participate.
