Dili : Calm prevails in Timor Leste on Tuesday, amid tensions over possible consequences of the recent attacks against the president and prime minister.
President Jose Ramos Horta was shot and wounded yesterday by a group led by former military deserter Alfredo Reinado, who died in the attack, according to Prime Minister Hanana Gusmao, who escaped unharmed in a similar action.
Ramos Horta was operated at an Australian hospital, and doctors are hopeful on his full recovery.
In the meantime, Hanana Gusmao is coordinating the steps to be followed to guarantee national security with the UN Peace Mission in Timor Leste.
Australia will reinforce its 800-member contingent affiliated to the mission, and New Zealand will do the same.
A curfew and state of emergency took effect until Wednesday, after Prime Minister Gusmao asked the population not to be led by rumors and to stay home.
