Berlin : The German government here Friday expressed hope that Sunday’s elections in Russia would be fair and democratic.
Talking at a routine weekly news conference, deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg stressed the need for elections, encompassing “democratic and rule of law standpoints.”
He pointed out that the Russian election campaign was also “ground for criticism,” including barring international election monitors and denying opposition politicians equal access to the media.
That notwithstanding, Steg was upbeat that the Russian poll would take place without major complications.
Chancellor Angela Merkel is to congratulate the winner of the Russian elections as quickly as possible, Steg said.
