Cairo : Egyptian authorities Wednesday allowed some 2,200 Palestinian pilgrims, who were stranded at an Egyptian port for five days, to return to the Gaza Strip via the Rafah crossing.
The decision was announced after a meeting held by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas with his Egyptian peer Hosni Mubarak, said official sources.
According to eyewitnesses, the Palestinian pilgrims crossed the border post closed by Israel since mid June when the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, took control of Gaza.
Many of them, including members of the Islamist Hamas movement, said they feared arrest if they returned through the Israeli- controlled border crossing. Some of them are already on Israeli wanted lists.
