Violence broke out last week between followers of proclaimed winner, Mwai Kibaki, and those of the loser, Raola Odinga, claiming nearly 200 lives.

According to Odinga, there was election fraud in December 27, and more than 250 people have been killed in subsequent clashes.

In view of this situation, police confirmed on Tuesday a ban on a march called by the opposition, scheduled for Thursday in the capital.

Post-electoral violence worst-hit places have been Nairobi and Kisumu, the capital and the third most important city in this country, respectively.

The Electoral Commission said Kibaki retained the post with 230,000 votes more than Odinga, from the Orange Democratic Movement.

On December 12 1963, this country won independence from Britain and the next year became a republic presided by the Kenya African National Union.
