By IANS,

Chandigarh : The first session of the newly constituted 14th Punjab assembly begins Monday, an official said here Sunday.

On the first two days, the 117 elected legislators will be administered oath followed by the election of the speaker Tuesday.

Former Lok Sabha deputy speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal, has already been sworn-in as the pro-term speaker.

Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil will address the assembly Wednesday.

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance had recently created history in Punjab by returning to power for a second consecutive time. The alliance won 68 seats in the 117-member assembly, beating the anti-incumbency factor.

It is for the first time in over 45 years that a government has been voted back to power.

While the Akali Dal won 56 seats in the Jan 30 assembly poll, the BJP won 12 seats.

The Congress has 46 legislators in the house while three independents also won in the recent elections.

Parkash Singh Badal took oath as chief minister for a record fifth time last week. At 84, he is the oldest chief minister in the country.
