A month after getting arrested, SP leader Gayatri Prasad Prajapati granted bail in rape case

Gayatri Prasad Prajapati, an ex-cabinet minister from UP and a leader of Samajwadi Party was granted bail by POCSO court on Tuesday.

Gayatri Prasad Prajapati was arrested on March 15 from Lucknow after he escaped arrest on February 27, 2017. It followed the Supreme Court’s order to UP Police to lodge FIR against Prajapati and six other associates in a rape case.

Prajapati and his associates allegedly gang-raped a women and tried to rape her daughter in 2014. The victim who belonged to Chitrakoot, accused Prajapati of clicking obscene photos and raping her for more than two years under the pretext of threatening to leak her photos.

After Uttar Pradesh Police refused to register FIR against Prajapati, victim approached Supreme Court, from where the order to FIR registration came on February 15, 2017.

During election campaign in UP, BJP promised to put Prajapati behind the bars as the first thing to do after coming into the power. Akhilesh Yadav’s government allegedly hesitated while taking any action against Prajapati as he was a favorable leader of the party. Mulayam Singh Yadav issued him a helicopter for campaigning during 2014 Loksabha elections.

Prajapati is also under Lokayukta’s eye under the charges of corruption. Five cases of corruption has been filed against him.
