Riaz Alam, 38, has had a carpet business for the past 20 years. Born and brought up in Bangalore. He lives with his family, his wife and two kids.
Since 12 years he has been in the same place selling carpets, before this he used to go to different places in his small cart. He says “business is not doing very well these days. Since April it has been dull. Earlier I used to get many customers.”
He has been fasting since childhood. About Ramadan he says, “When I was a kid I used to study, used to play, used to keep Roza. That time we were so busy with all these things, I never realised hunger. Now, if a customer comes, then I will talk to him. Otherwise I’m just sitting here. This time makes me think about myself and others. Now I understand what hunger and thirst is.”
