Lucknow : A court here Tuesday absolved Waliullah, a prime accused in Varanasi’s Sankatmochan temple serial blasts, of treason but convicted him on charges of illegal possession of weapons and conspiracy, an official said.
The sessions court sentenced Waliullah to 10 years of imprisonment with a fine of Rs.100,000, the official added.
In April 2006, Waliullah was arrested from Gosainganj locality in Lucknow with an AK-47 rifle and half a kg of RDX, an explosive.
The blast occurred in the temple March 7, 2006. At least 10 people died and over 40 were injured in the blast at the temple on a Tuesday, considered a special day for Hindu god Hanuman. Another blast took place at the railway station and at least 20 people died in the Varanasi serial blasts.
