Chennai : A 60-year-old American paedophile, arrested in Tamil Nadu on May 22, has been deported to the United States, police said.
Alan Jay Horowitz, who was arrested by the Kancheepuram district police in Mahabalipuram near Chennai, was deported after the Ministry of External Affairs issued the deportation orders.
The American was one of the 100 most wanted men in New York. There was a red-corner Interpol alert for him. Horowitz was convicted for paedophilia in Maryland, US, in 1983. He was again charged with sexually abusing children in 1991 and there are 41 pending cases against him, police here said.
On July 4, Horowitz was shifted to a high-security special camp in Chengalpet, 60 km from Chennai. The next day, Tamil Nadu police flew him to New Delhi and handed him over to the US embassy there.
He was Saturday put on a Continental Airline flight to New Jersey.
Horowitz, who had fled to Mahabalipuram, had jumped parole in June last year after serving 15 years in Oneida prison, New York, for charges of sexual abuse of minors. He was on probation when he jumped parole last June.
When he was brought to the Chengalpet special camp in handcuffs, the American said he had jumped parole as he "feared" for his life.
Questioned on the allegations of child abuse, Horowitz said: "Can you talk about your actions 17 years back?"
"I have always been a good man," were his final words here.
The American Consulate in Chennai had first alerted the Tamil Nadu police about his presence in India's east coast.
Police in Kancheepuram tracked Horowitz to a hut in the resort town. The American was remanded to custody by a court in Kancheepuram district and was interned in a prison at Puzhal, on the outskirts of Chennai for more than a month.
Horowitz is said to have fled the US, using a fake passport and travel documents, and arrived in India via Japan and Israel. According to police, Horowitz had been to Hong Kong, Thailand and Sri Lanka, before reaching Bangalore in May 2007.
