Kolkata : The Trinamool Congress Saturday claimed that its chief Mamata Banerjee’s convoy was stopped by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activists in West Bengal’s Bankura district. The police have denied the party’s version of the incident.
Mukul Roy, leader of the state’s main opposition party the Trinamool Congress, alleged that activists of the ruling CPI-M stopped Banerjee’s convoy and tried to prevent her from entering Bishnupur to campaign for the Lok Sabha polls.
“Everything happened in front of the police and they played the role of a mute spectator. Police did nothing to rescue Banerjee’s convoy,” Roy said.
The police, however, said Banerjee’s convoy just had to wait as a political rally was crossing her route near Mejia locality.
“There was a political procession going on so Banerjee’s convoy had to wait for a very short time. No one stopped her convoy and police personnel were there to take care of the situation,” West Bengal Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia told IANS.
“Banerjee is absolutely fine and now she is on her way to Bishnupur,” Kanojia said.
Later, Trinamool Congress supporters blocked a road at Mejia to protest the police inaction.
