New Delhi : Sirajuddin Qureshi, a well known businessman and national leader of the Quresh community defeated Congress leader Salman Khurshid to retain the presidency of the city’s India Islamic Cultural Centre (IICC) here Monday.
Qureshi polled 988 votes while Khurshid received 489 votes in an election that was held amid allegations of communalism.
According to an IICC official, the Centre has some 1,200 members from the capital. Besides, there was provision of postal ballots for outstation members.
The IICC, a hub of activities and programmes, seminars, symposiums on mostly Muslim issues, was inaugurated by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in June 2006.
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had laid the foundation stone of the centre in August 1984.
