New Delhi: The ruling Congress Monday described the “leakage” of the Liberhan Commission report in the media as “a very serious issue” and said the party was confident the government would take cognisance of it.
Congress spokesman Manish Tewari, speaking to reporters, also hoped the government would table the Liberhan Commission report in parliament at the earliest.
Tewari said the government had to make the report public under the Commissions of Inquiry Act within six months of it having been submitted, along with the Action Taken Report. He said the six-month period would end in December. “Let the report come before parliament,” he added. The report was submitted to the government June 30.
Taking a swipe at the media, Tewari said tongue in cheek that he appreciated the “investigative skills of the media”, but leakage of the report was a very serious issue.
“I am confident the government will take cognisance of it,” he said.
Asked about the Liberhan report purportedly indicting top Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, the Congress spokesperson said the Babri Masjid events had been played out in full in public domain. “The Supreme Court had punished then BJP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh. The culpabililty is already settled in the minds of the people and it lies squarely with the BJP and its affiliate organisations.”
He called upon the opposition not to disrupt proceedings of parliament and raise issues of its concern according to the rules. “The sittings over the past three days have been disrupted due to the opposition uproar,” he said.
Asked about the source of leakage, Tewari said he would not go into the issue.
“We appreciate the investigative skills of the media. I wouldn’t go into it. There are many ways in which leakage can take place,” he said.
