Congress has dual position on Babri, says Brinda Karat

By IANS,

New Delhi : Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat Tuesday accused the Congress of having a "dual position" on the Babri Masjid issue by not referring to the demolished structure as a mosque.

Karat said her party objected to Home Minister P. Chidambaram referring to the disputed structure in Ayodhya as the "Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid structure".

Referring to the minister's remarks in the course of tabling the Liberhan Commission report in parliament, Karat said the structure that was demolished was a mosque.

She said the Congress was giving a twist to the issue.

"This shows the dual position of the Congress government," Karat told IANS outside the Parliament House.

On the Liberhan Commission report, the Marxist leader said her party was studying it. "But we want that action should be taken," she said.

The Liberhan panel report has indicted the Sangh Parivar for the Dec 6, 1992, demolition of the 16th century mosque in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. The incident triggered communal riots in the country.
