‘Kerala Chief Minister should withdraw his controversial statement’

New Delhi: The Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan should immediately withdraw his controversial statement that there were deliberate efforts to make the state Muslim-majority in 20 years, demanded noted writers and civil rights activists including Arundhati Roy in a statement.

They asked the political leaders not to repeat such statements which destroy the communal harmony prevailing in Kerala.

Around 40 including Dr BD Sharma, Sumit Chakravarty, Raj Kishore, Dr Mehar Engineer, Prof Hargopal, S Bismilla, GN Saibaba and Zafarul Islam Khan signed the statement.

Kerala Chief Minister had last week said in New Delhi that there were deliberate efforts to make the state Muslim-majority within 20 years. The plan was to influence young men to convert to Islam offering them money and then they marry Muslim women and beget children to increase Muslim population. The statement had attracted strong criticism from religious organizations and political parties alike. However, the CM has not yet got ready to apologise for or withdraw the statement, which is seen as part of the new Hindutva-appeasement policy of the CPI (M).
