AMU gets biggest chunk of students
Gujarat fulfils only 35% of its quota, least among all states

With the aim to gear up students from Minority communities in the field of higher education, Government of India has launched ‘Maulana Abul Kalam Azad National Fellowship’ from this year which will encourage and financially help them.
Community ratio
In its first year, a total of 755 students are selected for Azad fellowship grant. An analysis of the students selected provides some interesting insights. In the original scheme, 756 students were to be selected for this fellowship and a quota set for Buddhists, Christians, Muslims, Parsis, and Sikhs. The actual list of selected list is one less than 756 but exceeds community quota for all but two communities- Muslims and Parsis.

Though there was no quota set aside for female students. In the final list there are more females than males for all communities except Budhists (Only one male Parsi in the list).

The scheme also had quotas for each student and for Muslims; most states come very close to their quota or exceeded it except for Gujarat which could give only 6 students against a quota of 17. Gujarat’s loss was Uttar Pradesh’s gain which gave 128 students against its quota of 114.

Universities:
For Muslim Maulana Azad fellows, the most popular university is Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) which gains most students than any other institutions. 148 students selected AMU as their place of research. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi comes a poor second with 46. Jamia Millia Islamia also in New Delhi comes third with 36 students.

Subjects:
These 539 Muslims among 755 students will be the future leaders of their community. In their positions as teachers, researchers, authors, and scientists- they will be in a unique position to take their community to new heights of development and enlightenment. So it pays to look at their areas of research.
Over 100 subjects are selected by 539 Muslim students. Among the individual subjects, Urdu is the most popular subject with 45 students opting for it. Commerce comes second with 40 students and Chemistry third with 31 students. Arabic with 30 students and History with 29 students are close fourth and fifth, respectively.
In languages, Urdu, Arabic and Persian are most favoured but Muslims have also opted for English, Hindi, Bengali, Malyalam, Oriya, Tamil, and Sanskrit. Yes, you read that right, two students have opted to do research in Sanskrit.
In sciences, Chemistry, Zoology, and Geography are the top three choices. In social sciences, History, Education, and International Relations are the top three subjects.
It is interesting to note that only 17 have chose to study Islamic or religious studies.

About the scheme:
Under this scheme students will be provided with integrated five year fellowships in the form of financial assistance as notified by the Central Government to pursue higher studies such as M. Phil and Ph.D.
This fellowship will be on the pattern of University Grants Commission (UGC) Fellowships given to research students pursuing regular and full time M. Phil and Ph.D courses and the scheme will cover all Universities/Institutions recognized by the UGC under section 2(f) and section 3 of the UGC Act and will be implemented by the Ministry of Minority Affairs (MoMA) through UGC for students belonging to the minority communities.
The total number of fellowship holders each year will be 756 which will be known as MoMA scholars. Of them, 30% shall be earmarked for women students and remaining 70% will be general. In case the shortage of women candidates, the fellowship can be passed on to male students. The reservation for differently-abled students shall be made as per the UGC norms.
