Wali Rahmani congratulates Prof. Lutfur Rahman on winning Ghalib Award

Patna: Maulana Wali Rahmani, Sajjada Nashin, Khanqah Rahmani of Munger, congratulated noted Urdu writer and critic Prof. Lutfur Rahman on being selected for the Ghalib Award-2010 by Ghalib Institute, New Delhi.

Appreciating the Ghalib Institute for selecting Prof. Lutfur Rahman for the prestigious award, Maulana Rahmani said: “It took Ghalib Institute much time to recognize the contribution of Prof. Lutfur Rahman in the field of Urdu literature. Though very late, it is a right step taken by the institute.”

He further said that Prof. Lutfur Rahman is a respected name among Urdu speakers. “He has served Urdu with his research and sincere criticism on Urdu language and literature. His works benefited Urdu knowing people and are precious documents for coming generation” he added.

The Ghalib Institute gives awards to the people every year for their contribution to the Urdu in various ways. The Ghalib Awards, given in the spheres of Urdu prose, poetry, criticism, and drama etc., are considered highly prestigious in academic world. This year the institute has selected Prof. Lutfur Rahman for this Award.

Born in Darbhanga district of Bihar, 59-year old Prof. Lutfur Rahman is an Urdu writer, poet and critic. He did MA from Bihar University (Muzaffarpur) and Ph.D. from Patna University. He served as the Head of the Urdu Department at Bhagalpur University.

He has written various books in Urdu literature. Besides, he has written many articles and composed many ghazals and nazms that were published in various journals and newspapers. But his two books in criticism- Jadidiat ki Jamaliyat and Rasikh Azimabad — brought him much fame in the Urdu literary world.

Besides literary world, Prof Lutfur Rahman has also been in politics. He contested 1995 Bihar Assembly election on RJD ticket for the first time and was elected to the house from Nathnagar constituency in Bhagalpur district.

In 1997 when Lalu Prasad resigned from the post of chief minister following fodder scam and his wife Rabri Devi took his place, Prof. Lutfur Rahman was among 9 Muslims MLAs who were made ministers. He was given portfolio of Minority Welfare. He unsuccessfully contested 2000 Assembly election on RJD ticket while 2005 Assembly election as independent candidate.
