“Chup Tazia” procession in Lucknow: A religious and cultural tradition

Lucknow: Thousands of Shia muslims took out the traditional ‘chup tazia’ procession in old parts of Lucknow on Tuesday. The procession originated at 5 am from Imambara Nazim saheb and culminated at Roza-e-Kazmain at around 8 am as per the prescribed schedule. The procession is the sevent permitted procession as per the tripartite agreement between shia-sunni and district administration sealed in 1999.

As per Syed Naqi Hussain Zaidpuri, an expert on shia processions in Lucknow the juloos dates back to nawabi era and was started by Nawab Ahmed Ali Khan Sahukat Yar Jung. The nawab had considerable palaces in local Sarai Mali Khan and is reported to be a descendent of Bahu Begum of Gujarat. Presently the procession is managed by Agha Mohd Baqui aka Shanno Miyan who is also Head of the Urdu Department in Shia PG College. As per the tradition the procession marks the rukhsati of Hazrat Imam Hussain and is taken out on eight rabi-ul-awwal.
