Chennai: Tamilnadu Tauheed Jamaat held a grand rally in Chennai on Sunday to demand 10% reservation for Muslims in education and job in the light of Ranganath Mishra Commission report. The Jamaat also demanded quota for Muslims in police and armed forces and intelligence agencies.
Citing the reports of Justice Rajendra Sachar and Ranganath Mishra Commissions, the Jamaat demanded the Union government to provide 10% quota for Muslims in employment and educational institutions.
The rally was led by Jamaat founder P Zainul Abideen and attended by several thousand people – men and women, old and youth. The rally began from Pallavan House on Anna Salai and ended at Island Grounds, the conference venue.
The conference urged the Centre to provide 10 per cent exclusive quota for Muslims in employment in the Central and state governments besides the public and private sector organizations and 10 per cent reservation for the community in all educational institutions including the centres of excellence like the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Management.
The Jamaat also demanded the Centre to reserve 20% of the posts for Muslims in the State police forces, intelligence agencies, Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force and the armed forces. Other demands included setting up of Muslim universities, and 10% quota in the government welfare schemes.
The massive gathering demanded 10% quota in both the Houses of Parliament, State legislatures and all local bodies.
Tamilnadu Tauheed Jamaat urged Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to increase the present quota for Muslims in the state to 7%. The Jamaat also appealed to him to use his good offices to persuade the Centre to implement the Ranganath Mishra Commission report.
