Islamabad : US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) may be asked to probe the kidnapping of an American national in Lahore, a media report said Tuesday.
Warren Weinstein, 63, was kidnapped Aug 13 from his home in Lahore city by nearly 10 people.
He had been living in the area for four or five years.
The daily Dawn said that two officials met a US diplomat Monday to look at the possibility of a joint investigation with the FBI.
Punjab Home Secretary Shahid Khan and city police chief Malik Ahmad Raza Tahir met Carmela Conroy, the principal officer of the US Consulate in Lahore. They wanted information on Weinstein`s family and his company’s activities, said sources.
Weinstein maintained a low profile and did not even use security guards while travelling, the officials told the diplomat.
The media report said that only a select few, including Weinstein’s driver Mohammad Israr and one of the three security guards who have been detained, knew the code of the card swapped to open the door of his room.
A US undercover agent, Raymond Davis, had fatally shot two Pakistanis in Lahore in February, which had caused deep rift in relationship between the intelligence agencies of the two countries.
The ties between Islamabad and Washington were further strained after the May 2 killing of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad by US commandos.
