The INL demands a seat each in Malappuram, Kasargode, Kannur and Kozhikode districts and the Iravipuram constituency in south Kerala. The party will hold a state representative members’ meet and welcome the national leaders on March 12 at the Muthalakkulam Maidani in Kozhikode. The party’s policy supporting the LDF will be announced there. National general secretary Muhammed Alauddin Ansari will inaugurate the programme at 4 pm. The leaders said that the party had thrown out some people on disciplinary grounds and it was ridiculous to call it ‘merger’ if those people joined another party. The party is going forward with the slogan ‘purity in individual life, ideals in public life’ and the acts of those working on selfish motives haven’t harmed the party at all, added the leaders. State President SA Puthiyavalappil, national secretary Ahmed Devarkovil, state general secretary AP Abdul Vahab etc were present at the press conference.

The INL had been with the LDF since its formation, but left the LDF camp and cooperated with the UDF during the Panchayat elections held last year. The party took the decision as the LDF was not willing to take the party into the alliance even though it had stayed with the LDF for long 14 years. But, a small section decided to go along with the LDF itself, thus forming the INL Secular. The official INL cooperated with the UDF but did not get an expected welcome and representation in the Panchayat elections. This led to a rift in the party as a section opted to go back to the LDF and the other opted to continue with the UDF. Thus the INL split again with the group led by the state president going back to the LDF and the one led by Siraj Ibrahim Sait and PMA Salam deciding to continue with the UDF. The latter group merged itself with the mother-organisation Muslim League in a grand rally held on March 6 in Kozhikode.
