Patna: 50 days ago, TwoCircles.net, in an election “ story ”, had asked if the number of Muslim MLAs will go up in the five assemblies that were going to poll. We had predicted that the number could go up as there is a race among both ruling and opposition parties to capture the Muslim vote to come to power. The results announced yesterday proved us true.

There were 105 Muslim MLAs in the five assemblies (West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry) together. Now the number has reached 130 – the big share has come from West Bengal where there was a mad rush for Muslim votes that were shifting from Left.
The major share of 130 Muslim MLAs has come from West Bengal where in all 59 Muslim candidates were elected to the new assembly, that is 13 more from the 2006 assembly poll. West Bengal has been followed by Kerala which will see 36 Muslim MLAs entering the Assembly. There were 25 Muslim MLAs in the outgoing Kerala assembly. Another state which has increased Muslim representation in assembly is Assam. The state had 25 Muslim MLAs in 2006. In the 2011 poll, 28 Muslims have been elected – majority of them are from All India United Democratic Front of Badruddin Ajmal. AIUDF has increased its tally of 10 members in assembly to 18.
However, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have lost one Muslim MLA each. The former had 7 Muslim MLAs. The new assembly will have 6. Similarly, Puducherry had 2 Muslim MLAs. In this election, only one could win.
