State President of TNTJ Moulavi P. Jainul Abedeen hit out at Congress-led UPA government at the center for not implementing the Muslim quota recommendation of its own Justice Rajindar Sachar Committee and Justice Ranganath Misra Commission. He also cornered Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha for not keeping her election promise to raise the present state Muslim quota of 3.5 per cent.

Sachar Committee had conducted in-depth probe on the living conditions and social status of the Muslims across the country and then recommended to the Union Government that 10 per cent reservation in education and employment opportunities should be given to uplift the community. Subsequently, the recommendations were tabled in the Parliament for its approval. Justice Ranganath Misra Committee even went a step ahead to say that the Union Government should give 15 per cent reservation to the Minorities and 10 per cent reservation for Muslims within this reservation to change the living condition of Muslims across the country.

“The Congress party, which came to power two times successively in the centre, had promised in its manifesto that the party would give a 10 per cent reservation to the Muslims if was voted to power. However, the ruling Congress, which was yet to take any step in this connection, promised in its manifesto for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls that it would give 4.5 per cent reservation for minorities, which is nothing but cheating the Muslims,” said Moulavi Abedeen.

“During the assembly election campaign, ruling Anna Dravida Munnetra Kalagam (ADMK) president Ms. Jayalalitha had promised the Muslims that she will increase the percentage of reservation from 3.5 per cent if was voted to power. We also demand 7 per cent reservation for Muslims in jobs and education in the state,” Moulavi Abedeen demanded.

To press the demands, TNTJ organized protest demonstration in sevral districts including Thiruvallur, South Chennai, North Chennai, Nellai, Thiruvarur, Thanjore, Tuticorin, Madurai, and Trichy. On this issue, TNTJ has already conducted a conference at Island Grounds in Chennai on July 4, 2009.

Moulavi Abedeen said that “only reservation will be the permanent solution for improving the socio-economic conditions of the Muslims. And if ruling Congress party goes on betraying the Muslims then it should face the consequences in the coming Lok Sabha elections.”

Police had imposed ban on the demonstration in Coimbatore citing February 14 as the anniversary of the bomb blast that had happened in the city in 1998. Security in the city was tightened. But defying the ban, hundreds of Muslims participated in the TNTJ protest on Tuesday. However, police took action and started many demonstrators. They were kept in a marriage hall and all were released by 9 pm.

TNTJ leaders urged the central and state government to hear their voice on reservation. If not, they will organise such protest at bigger levels.
