Bid to control population: Assam doc Ali to represent India at World NSV day in Australia

    Guwahati: Renowned surgeon and activist of population control in Assam Dr. Ilias Ali has been invited to be present on occasion of first ever World Vasectomy Day to be held in Adelaide, Australia on October 18 this year.

    It can be mentioned that Dr Ali is the sole Indian to attend the auspicious event for his services in the field of No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV). The objective the event is to popularize vasectomy among the male, to lessen the burden of family planning on women and accelerate the process of stabilization of population of the world.

    “As always I have been advocating for this to control the population. It’s great that the method is being accepted globally. I hope it’s a milestone. I will also try to give my best shot so that it can be taken to a wider section of people,” said Dr Ali before his departure to Australia on Wednesday.

    World Vasectomy Day is an event being planned by producers Gabriel Films and Smith & Nasht on October 18, 2013, to raise global awareness of vasectomy as a solution to prevent unintended pregnancies. The goal is for doctors all over the world to perform approximately 1000 vasectomies, connected to the event via Skype and social media platforms.

    Highly prolific expert, Dr Doug Stein, is scheduled to perform vasectomies in front of an audience at the Royal Institution of Australia (RiAus) to launch the inaugural World Vasectomy Day with the world’s-first live-streamed vasectomy-athon, according to their official website. Dr Stein also plans to answer questions from a live audience in Australia and an international online audience.

    Dr Ali who is professor of surgery cum HOD of Emergency Medicine and Trauma Centre of Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Assam’s premiere medicine institute is at the forefront of a noble mission of population control.

    “His presence at an overseas venue will be a proud moment for all of us as he will not only represent Assam but the entire country. The programme will include panel discussions and speeches by renowned international figures from this field. Meanwhile, the day will also be celebrated in different parts of the state with various programmes under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Assam,” said an NRHM official.
