Strong reaction by civil society; immediate action sought

Guwahati: Political parties, students’ organizations and civil society have raised its voice against the brutal killing of innocent villagers by armed militants of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD). All have condemned the incident as barbaric and sought for strict punishment.

Sanmilita Jatiya Oikyamancha (SJO), an umbrella organization of several non-Bodo organizations of Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) has also vowed to carry out economic blockade from May 5 if the state government fails to control the situation.

“The Congress government has failed to provide safety and security to the people of the state. The common people are being killed like animals but we have not seen any sharp and immediate reactions from the government. We will have to carry out economic blockade in the entire area so that nothing can enter the northeast region,” Jamsher Ali, SJO spokesperson said.

Blaming Bodoland People’s Party (BPF) and its leader Pramila Rani Brahma for her the violence, the forum demanded that democracy must be brought back to the BTAD. SJO also demanded a high level inquiry. “The entire incident started after Pramila Rani Brahma’s controversial statement that the Muslims have not voted for BPF which will lead to the party’s loss at the Kokrajhar constituency in the Lok Sabha election,” Ali said.

Heera Sarania alias Naba Kumar Sarania, former ULFA militant who is contesting from Kokrajhar as an independent candidate also demanded a high level inquiry and to ensure normalcy in the area.

All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Friday burnt the effigy of Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi for failing to control the law and order situation in the state. “We condemn the incident of killing people. We criticize the chief minister Tarun Gogoi for his failure in maintaining the law and order situation. We urge the state government to ensure peace and normalcy at the earliest,” AASU general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi said.

All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU), All Bodoalnd Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) and others too have condemned the incident. ABMSU has demanded strict action from the state government blaming BPF suspecting it to be behind the incident.


Altogether 11 villagers have been killed the bullets of the militants so far.

BJP, CPI (M), AIUDF and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have also condemned the incident and sought immediate action from the government.

“This is utter failure of the state government. Such kind of situation could have been averted easily if the home department was more alert and put the necessary action in the place. We demand a high level inquiry into the matter,” said AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.

AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal termed Pramila Rani Brahma’s comment as undemocratic and dangerous to secularism. “This is not at all acceptable. How can somebody make such statement? We condemn this and urge the state government to act immediately,” Ajmal said.

Char Chapori Sahitya Parishad (CCSP), a literary body of the state demanded that the state government should resign on failing to control the situation.
