Chennai: Fakeer Mohamed Althafi was elected as the president while Mohammed Yousuf was elected as the general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath at its 16th state general meeting.
The main agenda of the meeting held on Sunday April 26 at Platinum Hall, Erode, was to elect a new team of office bearers for the next three years, a release from Nazeer Ahmad said here.
The TNTJ has a by-law of not electing office bearers if they have already completed two consecutive periods. As per this by-law, the incumbent president Moulavi P Zainul Abedeen, general secretary Moulavi Rahamatullah and three more office bearers were not elected this time.
The newly elected office bearers are: Fakeer Mohamed Althafi (resident); Mohammed Yousuf (general secretary); Kaleel Rasool (treasurer); Moulavi M I Sulaiman (vice president) and Thaufeeq (joint secretary) apart from 10 secretaries.
Following were elected as secretaries: Moulavi M S Sulaiman, Sirajudeen,
Avadi Ibrahim, Thiruvarur Abdur Rahman, Mylapore Abdur Raheem, E Muhammed, Seyad Ali, Yusuf Ali, Chepauk Abdullah and E Farooq, the release added.
More than 4000 office bearers of smaller units around the state and neighboring states Kerala, Karnataka and from Gulf countries participated in the general body meeting.
Earlier, Althafi delivered a lecture on ‘Significance of Dawah’ and Kovai Rahamatullah presented the annual report of Jamath and its activities in which he has stated that Jamath has shown a tremendous growth compared to 2013-2014.
The president thanked the office bearers and announced that Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath will run a statewide awareness campaign on “Ill Effects of Tobacco, Smoking and Liquor” and also a massive conference for it.
TNTJ is a non-political socio-religious organization with following among Tamil-speaking Muslims. Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath has more than 900 branches across India and Sri Lanka, Gulf countries, Malaysia, Brunei, France, Australia and United States Of America with more than 10 lakh member base.
President Althafi, 35, is a hafiz, moulavi and he has also completed Master of Arts. He learned Hifz from madrassa in Thenkasi and later joined Thowheed Jamath in year 2002. He has delivered more than 1000 talks in various topics including few hundred non-Muslim question-answer sessions. He has visited Sri Lanka, Saudi, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Malaysia, Brunei on various occasion to deliver talks on Islam.
Recently, he authored a book ‘Muslim Theeviravathi’ (translated as ‘Muslim Terrorist’), which speaks about stereotypes of Islamic terrorism, Muslims in Indian Independence and current situation of Muslims in India.
Yousuf, general secretary, 40, is a business man. He was the joint general secretary during last term of office bearers and was in-charge of handling all legal and judiciary related issues while operating the jamath.
Treasurer Kaleel Rasool, 45, is a business man and chairman of ‘Kalanjiam Matric School Chennai’ and has an expertise in debating with Christians. Vice president Moulavi M I Sulaiman, 50, has good knowledge on Hadith, Seerah and Hadith fiqh. He was a treasurer during the last period too. Joint secretary Thaufeeq, 40, has good administrative skills. He has done monitoring and mentoring of district units and is in charge of orphanages, old age homes and new Muslims care units, the release added.
