Bihar: Fourteen held in connection with Muzaffarpur village riots; situation under control

Patna / Muzaffarpur: At least 14 people have been arrested in connection with clashes between two communities in a village in Muzaffarpur district in which four people were charred to death after a mob allegedly torched more than 40 houses following the recovery of the body of a kidnapped youth. Scores of people were injured.

The incident took place on Sunday about 70 km from Patna in minority community dominated Ajitpur Bahilwara village. The trigger was recovery of the body of a 20-year-old boy, who was allegedly abducted and killed for his love affair with a girl from minority community.

Muzaffarpur District Magistrate Anupam Kumar told TCN on phone: “We have arrested 13 people for rioting and one prime accused for the murder of the youth.”

Kumar said Ajitpur Bahilwara village with 2000 population. “More than 25 houses were burnt by the mob that also set ablaze vehicles. We have camped here. The situation is under control. Probe has been ordered by Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi.”

Iqbal Mohammad Sami, speaker RJD, from Muzaffarpur said every thing was under control at the village. Administration has announced Rs 5.5 lakh for the families of those who died while Rs one lakh will be given to those who have lost their houses or suffered any kind of damage (houses and injured). Rs 4200 will be given for utensils, blankets and fooding from state government to the villagers, an official said.

The incident was a result of the alleged love affair between the boy and the girl. Her family was not ready for the relationship while the boy’s side was ready. The duo studied in the same college. “Boy’s family had already lodged a complaint claiming he was missing. His family told me that the girl’s side called the boy at their home and alleged that he was killed and later buried in front of a place of worship.It was a dog that pulled out the body’s hand and the recovery of the body was possible.The clash occurred soon after,” Sami added.
