A total of 113 candidates qualified in the examination; 14 among them are Muslims, most of them Muslim OBCs. There are four Muslims, including Hossain, among the top 25. They are Muhammad Nazir Hossain (Rank 1), Rohed Shaikh (Rank 4), Mustaque Ahmed (Rank 17) and Renuka Khatun (Rank 18).

Hossain, a son of a farmer

Hossain comes from a farmer’s family from Malikberia village under the Ashoke Nagar police station of North 24 Parganas district. He has two brothers and one sisters, Hossain being the eldest of them all. Not only Nazir, all their family members are educated. His father Muhammad Manuar Hossain runs his family on agriculture and hence, Hossain was always attracted to cultivation and agricultural sciences. After completing higher secondary schooling from Rajibpur AV High School, Hossain finished graduation and post-graduation from Bidhanchandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya of Nadia. He even qualified in the NET examination.

Presently, Hossain is working at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, a Government of India agency and posted at Beldanga in Murshidabad district. He joined this job in 2008 but his service career started in 2007 itself when he was selected for the State Bank of India. “I first succeeded in West Bengal Civil Service Examination in 2011 and qualified as a revenue office in Group ‘C’. But I did not take that job,” Hossain told TwoCircles.net.

Later in 2012, he again qualified, this time in Group ‘B’ to be eligible as DSP in the state police service.
He was all set to join as DSP in third week of May when he came to know of the latest result. “I will for now join as DSP as the formalities for the Group ‘A’ job will take some months,” he said.

Hossain said he received encouragement from his father Mauar Hossain, mother Meherunnisa Bibi and wife Selina Khatun. “My parents always given support in any situation to become successful in education and in service also. This success means my parents ‘Dua’ has been accepted by the grace of Allah,” he said.

Selima Khatun working in a primary school as a teacher at Beldanaga too has qualified in the WB civil service examination 2013, albeit in group ‘C’.

What is the feeling after this achievement? Hossain said going by his experience of coming from a poor family, he feels there is a need for an initiative for backward class Muslim community meritorious students. He has already started a coaching centre for state civil service examination and various government jobs at Beldanga.

“Both my wife Selina and I teach Muslim students in this coaching centre,” Hossain said and hoped, “If Muslim community comes forward to join government services, then poor situation of the Muslim community will change.”

So, his motto is to change the community’s position, especially in Murshidabad, which is Muslim dominated.
