Chandigarh: No flight has either landed or taken off from the airport here for the past four days.
Overcast conditions, foggy weather and a defunct Instrument Landing System (ILS) are the reasons behind this glitch, which has forced passengers to look for other modes of transport.
“I had my booking with Go Air airlines and I waited till the last moment for the weather to get clear. Now I have finally decided to go by road and have hired a taxi to Delhi,” Vivek Sharma, a harried passenger, told IANS Wednesday.
These days one can see a rush at airport taxi stands. Taxi operators are doing brisk business because of the rough weather.
“Today again we have cancelled all the flights. However, we had informed our passengers about the cancellation well in advance. We are trying our best so that our passengers do not get harassed due to any kind of confusion,” said an official of Jet Airways.
Air India, Jet Airways, Go Air, Kingfisher and MDLR are the airlines that operate from here. The flights service New Delhi, Mumbai, Jammu and Srinagar.
Chandigarh is considered a gateway to Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, so usually this airport is full of activity and everyday around 15 flights arrive and depart from here.
Things were no better at Rajasansi International Airport in Amritsar city of Punjab, around 250 km from here, as no flights from Delhi and Mumbai have arrived for the last three days, due to poor weather.
