Obama, whose father was from Kenya, announced the White House celebration during a meeting with African leaders at the Group of Eight (G8) summit in Huntsville, Canada.

“I’ll be 49 in August,” Obama reportedly told the gathering Friday, noting that his father was a first-generation African who studied in the US.

The meeting will aim to discuss the future of the African continent and focus on security, youth and social issues.
